Books for self improvement can be absolutely LIFE CHANGING. While many books have similar messages, I’ve found that repetition is key because it really drills basic concepts into your head.
Before you even pick up a book, though, it’s crucial to understand that you’ll only get out of it as much as you put in.
These books are not cure alls. You aren’t going to magically become a new person overnight. You have to go in open-minded and actually put in work to make a change.
I’ve read my fair share of books for self improvement and have found that each one has taught me at least one valuable lesson. From forming healthy habits to understanding the importance of positive self-talk and more, the books I’m sharing have changed my perception and improved my quality of life.
No matter how old (or young) you are, it’s never too late (or early) to pick up one of the best books for self improvement.

Atomic Habits by James Clear
If you are trying to form new habits or get into a new routine, this book is for you.
The whole premise of this book is to become 1% better every day. While 1% may not seem like a lot, if you stick with it, it really does add up!
It kind of reminds me of getting Starbucks. In the moment you’re like “eh what’s four bucks gonna do?” so you buy one… and then you come back the next day…. and the next day… and next thing you know you’ve spent thousands of dollars at Starbucks! (Sadly, I’m speaking from experience.)
Atomic Habits is different from other self-help books I’ve read because it teaches you how to realistically implement new habits.
Doing a complete 180 overnight, while possible, is challenging to maintain for a long period of time because you’re not used to it. This book teaches you exactly how to reach your goal by starting with one small thing at a time.
For example, last summer I realized I only drank black iced coffee and was severely dehydrated. (Obviously!) So, I decided that I wanted to start drinking more water. I started by drinking a glass every morning before breakfast, which seemed like a complete chore at first. However, after a few weeks, it was second nature. Now, I always carry a water bottle with me and never have to think about being dehydrated.
It’s actually insane how one small change can cause such a ripple effect.
Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy
This book is arguably one of the prettiest books I own, but that’s not the only reason to get it.
While Atomic Habits focuses on change through repetitive actions, the Power of the Subconscious Mind focuses on change through repetitive thoughts. It looks at how our subconscious affects our behavior, perception and ultimately the world around us.
It’s like when you wake up in a horrible mood and then you’re late to work and you forgot your coffee and your boss yells at you. Usually, when this happens I think something along the lines of “life sucks” or “everything’s going wrong.”
Our subconscious mind feeds off suggestions and when we give it negative suggestions, we, in turn, have negative experiences. It reminds me of when someone says they hate when people chew with their mouths open and then suddenly everyone around you chews with their mouths open.
This book teaches you how to reframe your negative thoughts and change the perception you have of the world. Once your perception changes, so too does your experience.
I’m not going to lie, I still go down paths of doubt and self-pity, but the Power of the Subconscious Mind has helped me catch these thoughts and feelings early, so I can redirect them before any more damage can be done.
Practicing the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
If you are looking for a straight-to-the-point, super quick read, try this one out.
Echkart Tolle is an amazing author. He knows what he’s talking about and how to get his point across in a succinct manner. I’ve read a few of his other books, but this one remains my favorite.
I like it because the focus is on living in and enjoying the present moment. Oftentimes, we get so set on the belief that once this happens, I’ll be happy. The thing is, you never will truly be happy, if this is your mindset.
When I was in high school, all I cared about was getting into college. I thought once I got into college all my troubles would just go away. That was a cute thought!
You see, once I got into college, then I was worried about getting into a sorority and then getting good grades and then an internship and so on.
Practicing the Power of Now gives you exercises and meditations to, as the names suggests, practice being more present. I’d recommend this book to anyone who is particularly anxious, worrisome or fearful.
Why Men Love Bitches by Sherry Argov
Okay so on the surface this pick does not seem like a book for self improvement – BUT I think it is and hear me out.
I’ve always been a people pleaser. I love when people like me. I love making people happy. I love being someone people can depend on.
While that’s all sunshine and rainbows, the truth of the matter is that when you are constantly trying to make other people happy, you may be neglecting to make yourself happy.
Why Men Love Bitches taught me how to establish healthy boundaries and set standards in my relationships, both romantic and platonic. It completely changed the way I interact with other people and made me finally feel less guilty about saying no to something.
So even though it isn’t a self-help book in the traditional sense, it’s a book that has improved my life.
The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein
Right off the bat, this book has a more spiritual undertone than the other books on this list.
As someone who does follow an organized religion, I did feel like this book was a little “woo woo” at times; however, that does not take away from all the good things that happened in my life after reading this book.
Something unique about The Universe Has Your Back is that it has little meditations written into the book and I believe there’s a link where you can access her mediation music. (I didn’t use this feature when I read the book.)
In the book, Bernstein also shares her personal experiences that shaped her perception of the world. She talks about an all-encompassing love and how focusing our energy on positive experiences will drive positive experiences to you.
If you’re on the more spiritual side, this might be a great one to start with.
Stop Doing That Sh*T by Gary John Bishop
Unlike the light and airy language of other authors on this list, Gary John Bishop uses an in-your-face approach in his book, Stop Doing That Sh*t.
If you like books that are brutally honest and tell it like it is, this one’s your best bet.
This book helps you see what you did in the past that got you to where you are today. It shows how habits and patterns have affected your life and will continue to do so unless you break the cycle.
Sometimes it feels like you’re getting a stern talking to, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need to make a change.
The Book of Joy by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu
I think this was my very first self-help book (awww!)
I bought this book when I was a senior in high school and have no clue why I picked it up. Nevertheless, it’s a book that I continuously go back to and even gift to other people.
While I don’t practice Tibetan Buddhism or Anglicanism, these two religious leaders are so insightful and provided such wonderful commentary that I couldn’t put it down.
I love that this book is different from the other books on this list in that it looks at both joy and suffering. It focuses on improving your life by paying attention to your feelings, rather than accomplishing something.
Another thing that is important to note is that I didn’t find it preachy. Yes, the authors are religious, but I didn’t feel like they were trying to convert me by any means. If anything, it just gave me a new outlook on life.

Best Cleanser: Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
For the longest time, I genuinely thought you only needed to wash your face if you worked out or wore makeup. Boy was I wrong!
Face cleansers are made to remove all the dirt, oil, sweat, etc. that naturally covers your face throughout the day. How many times a day you wash your face depends on your skin type and your skin goals, but experts recommend washing one to two times a day.
I was first introduced to Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel in New York City, when I was getting a facial. The foaming gel felt so good on my skin that I knew I couldn’t leave without buying a bottle!
While it’s a little pricier than the cleansers I typically go for, I think the quality is 100% worth it.
It’s a very gentle and lightweight product that contains mint balm and lavender extracts to calm the skin. It’s also vegan, certified cruelty-free and doesn’t contain microplastics or parabens.
If you have super sensitive skin like me, try giving this mild cleanser a go.

This product completely changed my skin!
Face masks can be used for a variety of reasons from hydration to exfoliation. I’ve actually found that this mask tackles both.
Exfoliating is so important to incorporate into your skincare routine because it removes dead skin cells and prevents the appearance of aging.
Although I’ve always known this, my sensitive skin and keratosis pilaris make it hard to find exfoliating products that don’t turn my face bright red. That’s until I gave this little guy a shot.

Best Toner: Fresh Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Toner
While toners are my no-means necessary for happy healthy skin, I have found that they help get rid of the remaining makeup on my face and leave it cleaner.
To apply, I use a cotton pad and swipe it over my face. I like to use it after cleansing and before moisturizing, to get a little extra hydration.
Fresh Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Toner is the best because it doesn’t upset sensitive skin and leaves my face feeling hydrated. My skin is pretty dry, but this product has reduced those dry patches I get, especially during the winter months.
Another pro is that it smells like roses! Oftentimes, scented products leave my skin agitated and red, but this toner is really great at keeping my skin calm and my skin tone even. (Having a red face is not a cute look.)
Best Face Oil: Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Face Oil
Face oils are miracle workers in the way they hydrate your skin. (And this one leaves my face particularly dewy!)
I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the thickness of the oil or the glow it gives my skin, but Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Face Oil feels super luxurious and high end.
Made from the “pip of the marula fruit,” this face oil is free from chemicals and rich in antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9.
I use this every morning after toner and before moisturizer. I like to lather my face with a few drops, but I know others who like to mix it with their moisturizer.
If you struggle with hydration, this product is about to be your new best friend. I swear by it!
Best Face Sunscreen: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 PA+++
Whether you live in super sunny Miami, like me, or reside in a cooler cloudier location, wearing sunscreen is super important.
Not only does sunscreen protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, but it also works to prevent skin discoloration and wrinkles.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 PA +++ is my all-time favorite because it’s lightweight and completely invisible. (Goodbye pesky white marks!) Perfect for all skin types, it contains a list of clean ingredients and is filled with antioxidants. It also has a kind of a makeup-gripping finish, like a primer, so it’s perfect under makeup.
Best Moisturizer: Sephora Collection All Day Hydrator Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid
Moisturizer not only hydrates your skin, but it also forms a barrier between your skin and outside conditions.
When it comes to moisturizers, I’ve tried everything from drug store creams to La Mer’s ultra-high-end products. Honestly, this Sephora Collection product blows all of them out of the park.
I had been using Fresh Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Moisturizer for a very long time, and liked it, but made the switch after a Sephora employee recommended this one.
I’m not going to lie, I was a little skeptical at first. I’d always assumed Sephora Collection products weren’t as good as the other brands they sell because of their lower price point. That’s simply not the case.
At first, the moisturizer feels pretty thin, but once you put it on your face, you’ll instantly notice how hydrating it truly is. It’s the perfect moisturizer to apply before makeup because it’s not too thick and gets the job done. (Bonus: At the time of publication, it’s $18!)
Best Eye Cream: OleHendrickson Banana Bright Eye Crème
Kendall and Kylie Jenner first put me on to this brand in 2012, when they shared that their older sisters swore by OleHendrickson’s eye cream. Being the impressionable 12 year old that I was, I immediately forced my parents to buy it for me.
While the eye cream they recommended 10 years ago has since been discontinued, I love this one just the same.
OleHendrickson Banana Bright Eye Crème is formulated to brighten, firm and hydrate under the eyes. On its site, it notes that an independent consumer panel of 37 women all agreed that it instantly brightens the area, and I have to agree.
The fact I’ve been using it for 10 years now is insane! But, this product is a great preventative and has continued to make my skin look bright and beautiful.
Best Lip Mask: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C
It’s no secret that this product is wildly popular. But just because it’s popular, doesn’t always mean it’s worth the hype. Luckily, for the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C, this is not an issue.
I don’t even know where to begin! The scent is to die for. The formula is rich and thick, but not sticky. The container lasts so long. (I’ve been using the same jar for a year now.) And, it leaves my lips looking smooth and hydrated.
Oh, I forgot the best part! Unlike other balms that target dry lips, this one doesn’t burn upon application. (I’m looking at you Carmex!)
Best Acne Remedy: Mario Badescu Drying Lotion
This is my ultimate holy grail product for beating blemishes. Don’t tell my brother I’m telling you this, but I’ve even used this on his face before, and now he’s always asking to borrow it!
While I do look like a crazy lady with white dots all over my face every time I use this drying lotion, I much prefer looking crazy than walking around with ugly red bumps!
The best way to apply it is by taking a Q-Tip and dipping it all the way to the bottom. Be careful not to shake before inserting the swab. Then, use the Q-Tip to coat each blemish.
Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is super drying (hence the name) and is only meant to be a spot corrector. Don’t use this everywhere, unless you want to wake up to a dry flaking face.

While you may have heard of the term “self-care,” you might not know that there are actually eight different types of self-care! Consider this your ultimate guide.
Self-care isn’t just spoiling yourself or indulging in “me time!” While those things can very well be a part of your self-care, there are so many other types of self-care that can really increase your quality of life.
As a recent college graduate entering the work world, I know how overwhelming and confusing life can get. Although there are many many things that you cannot predict or control (like a global pandemic), you can’t let those things get in the way of your happiness.
That’s why it’s absolutely essential to implement some kind of self-care into your daily routine.
So, without further ado, here are the eight types of self-care that you need to know right now.
The Essential Types of Self-Care:
1. Physical
Physical self-care is perhaps the easiest to start with, as it includes any physical action that you take to care for yourself. (Think brushing your teeth, working out, taking a bath.)
I know what you’re thinking: “Gab, isn’t that pretty obvious?” Well, the thing is, it’s not. Especially when we become busy or stressed out, it’s really easy to let these mundane tasks fall to the wayside.
I mean how many times have you put your greasy hair up because you didn’t have time to take a shower? Or how many times have you told yourself that you are going to start meal prepping and eating better, only to grab a snack bar filled with sugar (no judgment) on the way out the door?
By placing importance on things outside yourself, it’s only a matter of time until you realize you are overworked, exhausted and unhappy.
Here are some tips and tricks that I use to keep me on track and stay accountable:
- Habit Stacking: I recently read Atomic Habits by James Clear and he goes into this concept in great detail, so I HIGHLY recommend reading his book for more information. But, for a quick overview, habit stacking is giving yourself an order for completing tasks. In my own day-to-day, I know that as soon as I get dressed, I can get a coffee. So instead of complaining about leaving my warm, peaceful bed, I get excited knowing that I’ll be drinking a cold cup of iced coffee in a matter of minutes.
- Accountability Apps: I don’t know if it’s just me, but there’s something about checking things off a list that is just beyond satisfying. There are so many different apps that help you implement new habits, but I personally recommend HabitShare – Habit Tracker. What I like about it is that you can keep your goals to yourself or you can add friends to the app to help you stay motivated. It features reminders, streaks, charts and other fun things to make sure you don’t blow yourself off.
- Buy things: Spending money is great. I love spending money. BUT, I hate spending money on things that I don’t end up using! So, a little method I use is buying myself things as a bribe to continue. For instance, if I know that I want to start going to yoga on Sundays, I’ll reserve a class for myself at my favorite studio on Sundays. Or if I want to start taking baths, I buy cute bath bombs that I can only use if I take a bath. Speaking of bath bombs, if you’re an addict like I am, you have to try the ones I linked in this paragraph!
2. Emotional
Emotional self-care is super important for your mental health. It includes any activity that gives you an emotional outlet or helps you process what you’re feeling.
Personally, I HATE talking about my feelings. It’s gross. It’s cringe. Big no. While therapy is an amazing tool that has helped so many people, it’s something that I’ve just had a hard time resonating with.
I much prefer to sit with my emotions and figure them out alone. Talking about it, for me, makes me feel like I’m in an interview.
Instead, I like to listen to music, journal and read self-help books. I like these methods of self-care better because I am not put on the spot; I’m identifying patterns in other people and relating them to my own situation. This also helps me feel less alone when I’m struggling.
Here are some journals and self-help books I’ve been loving, in case you’re curious:
- Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle: This book is a best seller for a reason. In my own life, I know it has helped me tremendously with staying in the moment and maintaining control over my emotions.
- Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy: Besides having a beautiful cover that goes quite nicely with my room decor, this book goes into depth about the subconscious and how you can use it to your benefit.
- Kate Spade Notebook: I like spending a little bit more money for a nice hardback journal because I use it every day and it’s so cute! Every night before I go to bed, I make a gratitude list and write it in my journal. I think of all the good things that happened that day, whether I won a large sum of money or had five minutes to talk to a friend. There’s literally nothing worse than lying awake for hours and going through every bad decision you made. By going back and focusing on even the smallest wins, I’ve realized that I’ve become a much happier person.
3. Social
Social self-care involves our relationships with other people.
Even if you are more on the introverted side, everyone needs some level of human interaction. With more and more people working from home, time for socializing is no longer built into the workday, leaving many lonelier than ever.
Personally, I am extremely extroverted and need to talk to people every single day. But when I get used to being by myself for an extended period of time, I have a harder time engaging in social activities. It’s the most bizarre thing!
I’m not saying you need to pack your social calendar full of events. That can get absolutely draining. Instead, I suggest that you make it a point to regularly contact your friends and loved ones.
One of my friends runs in a different circle than one of her best friends, yet they go to dinner at least once a month to catch up. I am overly close with my parents and try to call them at least once a day.
Something that I’ve recently started doing is taking a mental inventory of my friends and when I last spoke to or hung out with them. If it has been a bit, then I know I probably should reach out.
Going off that, never get offended when you realize you haven’t talked to a friend in a while. Everyone has busy lives and unless otherwise stated, it’s nothing personal!
4. Spiritual
Spiritual self-care practices aim at connecting with something greater than oneself. This can be in relation to religion, but it doesn’t have to be!
Some forms of these practices would be praying, meditation, surrounding yourself in nature or visiting sacred spaces.
I am a huge overthinker, so sometimes meditating or praying is hard because I get sidetracked and forget what I’m doing. Recently, I’ve gotten on the hot yoga wave and have loved it.
Yoga requires a lot of concentration and physical strength, so whenever I go to class, I feel like I have to pay attention and focus on getting myself in the right positions.
5. Personal
Personal self-care is all about YOU and what YOU love to do. It’s reconnecting with yourself through old hobbies. It’s taking on new experiences you might have been scared to try in the past.
Something that I love, that literally no one else in my life likes to do, is go to museums. I sound so “pick-me,” but I could spend (and have spent) hours looking at art and reading the little plaques next to the pieces. Although it’s an activity that I do alone, it’s something that I truly enjoy and carve out time for.
Sunday resets have also become routine! Every Sunday, I have a special regimen where I give myself a facial, coat my hair in a hair mask, wax my eyebrows, etc. It helps me look and feel my best before starting a new week!
Here are a few products that I incorporate into my “Sunday reset”:

6. Space
This type of self-care definitely wasn’t something that I immediately thought of. Like how does space fit into caring for yourself? But then, when I thought about it some more, it started to make sense!
It has to do with keeping your home, office, car, etc. comfortable, safe and healthy.
I’m not going to lie and say I’m the most organized girl because I’m not. But, I have noticed that when my environment is clean and organized, I do feel a huge weight off my shoulders! While I don’t mind having a pile of clothing on my floor every once in a while, if I constantly can’t find things in my mess, my stress levels skyrocket!
Something that I like doing is dedicating one day a week to cleaning my entire apartment. It just helps me stay accountable, clean and happy. If I don’t set deadlines for myself, I know it’ll never get done.
Here are some products that I use to clean and organize my spaces:
- K Knodel Car Trash Can: I don’t know about you, but I practically live in my car. I am always on the go (and hungry), so trash builds up quickly. To help with this, I bought this handy little trash can that has a lid and everything, so things aren’t spilling out. It’s so convenient and makes my space feel less cluttered.
- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: I feel like I always have makeup left on my hands after I get ready in the morning and then when I open the door, I get makeup all over it. These erasers are super easy to use and keep all my white surfaces white.
7. Financial
Time to talk about money! Financial self-care is all about sticking to your financial goals. This means saving, budgeting and splurging.
While going over finances is definitely not my idea of fun, especially when I’m looking at bills, it’s another aspect of self-care that I have found to be increasingly important as I’ve gotten older.
Knowing just how much money you are working with a month can save you big time not only from debt, but the stress that comes with debt. I don’t know about you, but getting to the end of the month and realizing you spent way more than you should have sucks and makes me panic.
There are many different ways of going about this but I recommend talking to a financial expert, getting your bank app on your phone to keep track and coming up with a realistic budget.
8. Work
This type of self-care helps you maintain a good relationship with work. It can be setting boundaries, asking for help and even taking small breaks.
I don’t know why, but I have this irrational fear that I’m going to get fired every time I walk into the office. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a great employee. I work hard. I get my tasks done. But, every now and then I can’t help but wonder if I’m not doing something right.
Instead of letting myself worry about something that isn’t actually a problem, I like to check in with the people above me every once in a while. Opening up that line of communication and asking for feedback has been so helpful because it breaks the barrier and shows that you are willing to listen to constructive criticism.
The anxiety about getting randomly fired hasn’t completely gone away, but having a good relationship with my higher-ups has tremendously helped me feel less nervous about the whole thing.
